Festive season: Roadside bonanza for traders

The Ministry of Transport and Highways has decided to grant temporary permission to those engaged in self-employment to carry out the trade of fruits and vegetables at designated locations along roadsides during the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive season.

Speaking during an event in Galle, Transport and Highways Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said that people had been unable to celebrate the Sinhala and Tamil New Year as usual during the past few years due to several reasons such as the Covid-19 pandemic. He added that entrepreneurs and self-employed producers can sell other items by the roadside as well.

“In this situation, most entrepreneurs, especially those engaged in self employment, had to face various difficulties in selling their products. Considering this, the ministry will be granting temporary permission to any trader who is willing to sell their products along roadsides during the festive season,” he said.

Explaining the implementation of the programme, Gunawardena said that traders would be able to sell their products at specific locations along roadsides which would be designated by the relevant authorities. He also said that the trading activities should be carried out at such places under the supervision of the relevant divisional secretary, without having to set up any constructions.

“At present, we have designated locations for traders to sell products, such as garments in Maharagama and several other areas. Similarly, such locations will be designated in other areas until the end of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festive season. Through this, traders will be able to sell their products to customers directly, which will be advantageous to both traders and customers,” he added.
