Economic crimes case: SC annuls travel bans on MR, Basil

The Supreme Court (SC) yesterday (22) informed the Immigration and Emigration Controller General that the overseas travel bans imposed on former President and incumbent Government MP Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa are no longer in effect.

A five-judge bench chaired by Chief Justice President’s Counsel (PC) Jayantha Jayasuriya issued this order when the petitions filed seeking investigations regarding the individuals responsible for the current economic crisis, in which a group including the aforementioned duo has been named as respondents, were taken up yesterday.

Appearing on behalf of the duo, Navin Marapana PC pointed out that the foreign travel ban imposed on his clients has not been extended by the SC after 7 October 2022. Therefore, he also requested the court to issue an order notifying the Immigration and Emigration Controller General in this regard.

The SC, which accepted the request, ordered the Registrar of the SC to notify the Immigration and Emigration Controller General that the relevant foreign travel ban is no longer in effect.
