The Colombo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (4) ordered that the Government Analyst’s (GA) report on the death of businessman Dinesh Schaffter be forwarded to the five-member committee of judicial and forensic medical experts who are tasked with uncovering the actual cause of death.
Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya gave this order to the Court’s Registrar following a request made by President’s Counsel Anuja Premaratne, who appeared on behalf of the aggrieved party. Premaratne told the Court that the GA has compiled a report on the injuries caused by the tie that was used to bind his hands, thus requesting that the relevant report be referred to the five-member committee of experts for onward investigations. Granting leave for the request, the Additional Magistrate fixed the next hearing of the case to 24 April.
On 27 February, a five-member experts’ committee consisting of five judicial and forensic medical experts were appointed to compile a report on the death of Schaffter. Accordingly, the committee headed by the Colombo University Head of the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology Department Prof. Asela Mendis, and including Prof. D.C.R. Perera, Prof. D.N. Fernando, Consultant Judicial Medical Officer Rohan Ruwanpura and Dr. Sivasubramaniam Murugupillai were appointed to the relevant investigative committee, tasked with concluding the cause of death of Schaffter.
