Cyclone Expected to Develop Over Bay of Bengal

The Department of Meteorology has announced the likelihood of a low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. According to the department’s latest forecast, this system is expected to intensify and move west-northwest towards the Tamil Nadu coast, near the northern region of Sri Lanka in the following two days.

Residents, especially in the Eastern and Northern provinces, are advised to remain vigilant and pay attention to updates and bulletins from the Department of Meteorology.

Today (16th), cloudy skies are anticipated across most of the island, with showers or thundershowers expected at times in the Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva, and North-western provinces, as well as in the Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts. Additional showers may occur in other areas during the evening or night.

The department warns of possible heavy rainfall, reaching around 100mm in certain locations within the Northern, Eastern, North-central, Uva provinces, and Matale district. A few morning showers are also likely along the western coastal areas.

Winds may strengthen to about 40 km/h in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Matale and Trincomalee districts. Additionally, misty conditions are expected in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces this morning.

The public is urged to take necessary precautions to minimize the impacts of temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
