Constable Hannifa’s death: investigation leaning towards murder, says Police

The mysterious death of a police constable in the Polonnaruwa area is still under investigation, but preliminary investigations so far is leaning towards murder, says Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa.

He mentioned this while speaking exclusively with The News Desk today (04).

“Constable Hannifa’s case is still an open file and the police is working around the clock to find the cause of death, the background leading to the death and the motive (if it is a murder). The Judicial Medical Officer’s report is not specific as the report mentions that no defence injuries can be seen on the body. If it was a murder, surely there would be some sort of defence injuries, at least bruises,” said Thalduwa.

He further noted that Constable Hannifa had two stab wounds, which was the cause of death as the wounds were from a sharp object and was deep.

“The Constable’s room window was broken and there was shards of glass around the area of the window. The bed, which was in the room, was neatly arranged and there was no indication of a struggle. If there was a struggle between two people, the room would have clearly been disheveled. In this case, the room was well kept. This is all a mystery and the police is working on this case. We are not trying to cover anything. Constable Hannifa has not had any disciplinary cases in the past and has served the police. Thus, we will investigate until we find the truth,” concluded Thalduwa.

Meanwhile, several social media posts are in circulation, alleging that the police is making attempts to cover the mysterious death and sweep the case under the rug, to which Thalduwa adamantly condemned.
