CIABOC ceases investigations regarding cash found at Presidential residence

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has announced to Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court that no further action will be be taken regarding the Rs. 17.85 million in cash found at former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s official room at the President’s House in Colombo.

With the Magistrate’s Court being informed on Wednesday (18), the CIABOC ceased action due to a lack of evidence.

The money was found by protesters as they stormed that official presidential residence during anti-government protests on 09 July 2022.

The Fort Police came into possession of the cash when it was handed over by protesters who were at the presidential residence on the day. It was the. given to Fort Magistrate’s Court three weeks later.

However, Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to initiate investigations into the delay by police when handing over the money. Gamage stated that there was reasonable doubt as to why the Fort Police OIC delayed the matter.
