Chinese aid: CIDCA Vice Chair meets Prez

China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) Vice Chairman Deng Boqing concluded an official three-day visit to Sri Lanka last week (7), where he had discussed enhancing China-Sri Lanka bilateral relations and promoting pragmatic cooperation with senior Government officials.

According to the Chinese Embassy in Colombo, Vice Chairman Deng had met with President and Minister of Finance Ranil Wickremesinghe and a number of other high-level officials. 

Deng had also held meetings with Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, and Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda. 

“They had in-depth discussions on enhancing China-Sri Lanka bilateral relations, promoting the pragmatic cooperation of the two countries and jointly implementing the Global Development Initiative, and exchanged views on China’s continued assistance to Sri Lanka in infrastructure construction, culture and education, and emergency humanitarian aid. Proposals of Chinese Governmental assistance to the island on capacity building, various support to fishermen, railway upgrades, etc. were raised by the Sri Lankan side and got positive response from the CIDCA delegation,” the Chinese Embassy tweeted. 

According to the Chinese Mission in Colombo, during the visit, both parties had signed key agreements which are important for the island’s economic recovery and social and infrastructure development.

Among them were an MoU on Strengthening Development Cooperation and Promoting the Implementation of the Global Development Initiative, an MoU on Implementing Emergency Humanitarian Assistance (remaining funds of RMB 134 million, apx. Rs. 62 billion). 

Further, letters had been exchanged on establishing an Electronic Data Forensics Laboratory (at the request of the Sri Lankan Government).
