Cabinet greenlights import of 15,000 MT of maize, GR11 rice for private sector

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the State Trading (General) Corporation to import maize to meet the demand for poultry feed production, the Department of Government Information (DGI) said.

The decision has been reached as a temporary measure to overcome the shortage of raw materials required for the production of poultry feed due to insufficient stocks of maize available in the market, according to the DGI.

Accordingly, the Department of Animal Production and Health has issued the relevant permit to the State Trading Corporation to import 15,000 MT of maize to fulfill the requirements for poultry feed production

Meanwhile, The Cabinet of Ministers has also green-lighted a resolution to allow the private sector to import 50,000 metric tons of GR11 rice, a variety similar to Keeri Samba.

The proposal was tabled by Minister of Trade, Commerce & Food Security and Nalin Fernando at the Cabinet meeting held on Monday (Dec.18).

In a statement, the government said the decision was taken in a bid to create competitive pricing for Keeri Samba and Samba in the local market and to provide relief to the consumers.
