BREAKING NEWS: AKD fails to secure 50% majority , will Sri Lanka for the first time begin counting second preference votes?

As Sri Lanka concludes the first round of the counting of votes for the 2024 Presidential Elections, it has been revealed that despite the posts circulating on social media, NPP Leader Anura Kumar Dissanayaka as not been able to secure the 50% votes required to be declared as the President.

Speaking to The Newsdesk SL from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) camp, Rehan Jayawickreme confirmed that as per the constitution, a second count has to take place with preference votes counted.

If this is to take place, this will be the first time in Sri Lanka’s history where a second preference vote will be counted.
