The Election Commission has provided a clear outline for the vote counting process in the upcoming general election scheduled for Thursday, November 14. During a recent media briefing, Election Commission Chairman R.M.L. Rathnayake announced that counting of postal votes will commence at 4:15 p.m. on election day, while the counting of regular votes is expected to begin around 7:15 p.m., contingent on the arrival of ballot boxes at counting centers.
The vote counting will follow a structured process: first, ballots from each box will be counted; next, votes for each political party and independent group will be tallied to determine the allocation of parliamentary seats. Finally, preferential votes for individual candidates will be counted, with those receiving the highest votes within their parties or groups elected to Parliament.
Rathnayake emphasized that results from each voting area and district will only be announced after thorough review and approval by the Election Secretariat. Additionally, the commission has urged voters to refrain from gathering near counting centers or along nearby roads during the counting process to ensure a smooth and orderly operation.
