Driver responsible for Constable’s death remanded

The driver who caused the death of a Police Constable after running him over with an SUV on Thursday evening (05) has been remanded until October 10.

On orders of the Colombo Magistrate Court No.07 (Traffic Court) this afternoon (06), the 27-year-old SUV driver was remanded. The deceased, 25-year-old Police Constable, Manoj Priyankara, died in hospital this morning while receiving treatment at the Columbo National Hospital.

According to police, the driver was arrested soon after the accident. It was added that he was unable to control the speed of the car, running the Police Constance over before crashing into the fountain located at the center of the Independence Square Roundabout.

The driver, a technical engineer at a private company, is a resident of the Narahenpita area. He is the son of a volunteer obstetrician and gynaecologist who had served at the police hospital years ago, later conferring the rank of Deputy Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
